I think it might have to do with male people being generally less accepting of different identities so if you grow up in a male environment - and as a kid you tend to stick to a friend group of the same sex up to a certain age - you might feel less comfortable admitting to yourself you're not male - especially if you don't feel particularly feminine either.

On the other hand it could also be connected to society putting a much stricter "rule" on how a woman should be and therefore more afab people will find they don't quite fit that description. Like, if a girl wants to have short hair people already ask if she's a lesbian or trans or whatever. If a boy wants long hair he probably just listens to metal.

The main stereotype is that non binary people are girls trying to be quirky. Not my words, just what I have heard.

I’m starting to feel like it’s becoming sort of a trend, but I won’t call anybody out because I don’t know how they feel. And even if you are a cis girl faking it, it won’t cost me anything to call you ‘they’.

I get that... I also feel like most amab people who are trans or at least identify with a different gender are very feminine whereas most afab people who don't identify as female seem to be enbies rather than "all the way" male... My sample might be skewed, of course, but it seems to be a general trend and not just one among kids and teens.
