I used to be collectivist because I knew we are dependent on others to an extent such as our employers giving us our jobs and paying us for our work and the landlords we rent from and when an employer acts upon their own will to refuse to give us a job or refuse to pay us for the work we do for them or a landlord acts upon their own will to evict the tenant at whim, that badly affects us as working-class individuals. I used to think that collectivism improves life for us as individuals but after seeing everyone's (including working-class individuals) well-being be destroyed by big government collectivist tyranny taking away everyone's individual freedom, I learned never to take my individual freedom for granted. I learned that collectivism ends up with big government tyrants crushing the little guy and not letting the little guy live their own life and do their own thing and destroying the little guy's well-being.
