Crunchyroll started out as a pirate site that charged money for the right to watch fansubbed anime on their website.(Which was/is a big fat no-no on all conceivable levels). Funimation like I said in the meme is censorship happy even though Adult Swim has put on shows that makes most Seinen look tame in comparison. There was the Vic Mignonga firing.

doesn't Funimation do a lot of the translations, subbing and dubbing? They seem to have a bit of a woke bent vs some of the source material too.

So what if crunchyroll started out illegal? It’s legal now.

Even though they used other groups fansubs for profit. All other groups at the time had a 'not for profit' disclaimer on their websites or embedded into the anime at the start/end. You may not realize it but Crunchyroll came close to getting the whole fansub community shut down for good.
