Okay, serious moderate left Democrat/Liberal here. Big question that hasn't been answered. How does the prosecutor know that the husband did it?
Is it possible GOP intercepted the mail (remember when they shut down mail sorters?) and filled it out for him on his behalf? It sounds he's more like a patsy, until I see the smoking gun.

The Ballot was filed by mail in his handwriting. Which makes it both electoral fraud and mail fraud.
Ink is traceable (particularly if you can match it to another sample posted at the same time from the same address)…

That's a real possibility. Her ballot would've had to be set aside as suspicious before the numbered ID tags were removed, or it would be anonymous among all other ready-to-count, tag-less ballots. If her ballot went any further, any fingerprints/DNA couldn't be found. It would have had postal tracking for delivery to the home address, maybe? He claimed he never received it. The situation suggests an initial error in mailing to a dead person - voter rolls are supposed to purged periodically with names checked against vital statistics. The signatures are checked upon receipt against those on file, another possible snag point. A closely matching signature points to someone with samples of a dead person's signatures. His own cursive characteristics might have been present. There's the remote possibility that a worker handling the ballot recognized the name, knew she was dead and flagged it.
The fraud was detected by: 1) physical inspection upon receipt, 2) by tracking, or 3) by the husband tripping himself up with contradictory statements. We shall see."
