If you don’t have a slingshot, depending on where the gift is floating (right or left), you can pop it just before it reaches the water.
If you’re playing on New Leaf, you can pop the gift when it is about to lower down to the beach using a net.
Idk about New Horizons, as I still don’t have it, but I hope this info helps!
