About 18 months ago, when I was extremely suicidal (I’m better now though), I almost became a theist because I had to believe that there was a higher power to eventually make things better. So yes, religion is definitely a way of staying hopeful.

I'm personally indifferent to religion. Sure, I believe that there is some God, but that's about it. I don't do any of the traditional things like praying or going to church.

I was talking to someone the other day and they mentioned that they were an atheist at one point in their life (they're a Christian). They explained that they were so sad and depressed that they gave up on god and once they regained happiness they believed in god again. What is your opinion on this?
