I think I got it. I placed the torch on tree leaves or something. I cut down the trees and the leaves faded, but the torch stayed

just think. fences have an extra half block above them. this is a feature of Minecraft and the woodland mansions have the cobblestone walls, a kind of fence. the torch is on the edge of the extra half block and when a block is mined it turns into an entity. the entity is hovering on the half block, creating the "glitch" you found. just basic knowlage.
