This is actually true! They start swelling up with gas inside after death, so it's never a good plan to stand near one on the beach, since they are relatively volatile and can explode throwing guts, gas and various other bodily substances in whichever direction the explosion pointed... sometimes the whole damn whale explodes so everything in a very large radius gets coated!
