Protogens are a species used by Furries; they were originally designed for space exploration in the lore developed by their creator, Malice-Risu (Furaffinity). Malice-Risu created them in response to the surge of popularity their species, Primagens, gained.
The story goes that many people were trying to make their own Primagens, which was a violation of copyright law as Malice-Risu created them to be a closed species. Closed species are mythological, artist created species, usually with their own lore and rules, which the creators have decided to limit the permission given to people to create or own their own characters of that species. This is, however, not possible through copyright law. It would have to be trademarked, requiring money and a legal process to happen, and would not be enforceable unless someone copied both the name and lore of the species. This would not protect it visually, except in the case of certain trademarked characters. This gives them a false sense of control over how their species is reproduced. Usually, closed species are designed to be shared, but Malice-Risu is very particular about who can own a Primagen, and it usually comes at an expensive cost.
