Those who read history will note that "Borrow and Spend," was a phrase coined to describe Republican governance after one of their billionaire tax cuts. Starting with Reagan, they gave big tax breaks. promising economic growth from billionaire investments that never followed. Then they replaced tax revenues with borrowed money,, giving the sense of economic good times. Then they lied to Americans about who were the big borrow and spendaholics.

Reagan tripled the national debt. Biden would have to leave $45-trillion dollars in debt to equal Ronnie's drunken binge.

Reagan defeated Communism and built up the military.

Communism was failing in the 1960s. Johnson and Nixon had to bail them out by selling them food. By the time Gorbachev took power, it was all over. He could have chosen to run on fumes like Brezhnev did, or change. He decided change made more sense. He wrote a book about it before he did it. Reagan built a resume on taking credit for the work of others. He ran against an voter's initiative to establish an income tax withholding in California. Remember his "Taxes should hurt," statement? Then, he took credit for the surplus the withholding created after his side lost and it was passed into law. Containment and attrition were official government policies, starting with Truman. Our strong post war economy was too much for the Soviets to compete with. Reagan did not have that much to do with anything major. The proxy conflicts they were suckered into including Vietnam and their final, expensive foray into Afghanistan, did the damage.
