Hi _bowie_bovine

"He" is actually without /a gender, seeing that He is a spirit (John 4:24), albeit, the almighty.

The reason for God to be placed as a male gender is because He depicted Himself in a way that finite humans can understand Him. Thus, He is anthromorphized as being in a male gender (to denote denote authority) and as the father (the ultimate source of).

Other anthromorphic descriptions are that He has hands as if He actually has a physical body (Exodus 6:1) and wings as if He had them (Psalms 17:8) but both emphasized His omnipotent abilities and characterial attributes. It is also worth mentioning that He also displays feminine qualities as well which is another example of His character (Isaiah 66:13)

It can be argued that because He anthromorphized Himself to be better understood He can be understood differently to other, less patriarchal societies. That would not be true. God specifically chose the Hebrews to use them as "the light" to the world (Isaiah 42:6). In other words, He is using Israel to spread the truth about Him to the world.

He chose them to demonstrate His graciousness in choosing the smallest of people (not meaning in terms of height but inferiority but likely because of their suitable, patriarchal understanding. He could have chosen other people with the opposite but that would probably prove too much for them as it was for Israel with regard to marriage (Matthew 19:3-8).

The common belief is that, as both man and woman are made in His image, they are both far lesser variations of him. Due to those clear distinctions, it can be assumed God is something different altogether, something that cannot be understood. Therefore, he chooses to manifest, or to be referred to, as male. Beyond that, transdimensional beings capable of creating existence dont necessarily need to have a gender.

It would be more accurate to state that He has both masculine and feminine attributes. Both men and women are made in the image of G-D, but they reflect different attributes.

C. S. Lewis wrote in his Perelandria that masculine and feminine are attributes that go beyond merely male and female, in the sense that while a mountain can't be described as male, it can be described as masculine. It's the same with G-D.

Hope that clarifies things up a bit! Also, UniformVictor gave a great answer.
