14. “Socialism” is perhaps the vaguest, most loaded and distorted phrase in modern political lexicon. Ask 10 people what it means and you’ll get 11 different answers. So, I don’t identify as one because no one agrees on what it means.

I support a mixed economy of the type that exists in all first-world nations. I do think economic inequality has gotten ridiculous and we should address that with the kinds of policies favored by the Democratic Party — basically, taxing billionaires and corporations at a higher rate and using the proceeds to make things like education, healthcare, and childcare more affordable, and empowering workers by strengthening unions.

18. Could be another multi-paragraph essay.

I ran across this tweet the other day. It can’t be improved upon.

4. Short answer: yes.

Tl:dr answer: Communism can mean one of two things. (1) The “pure,” textbook communism that Karl Marx theorized, which I’ll compress into the idea that societies should aim for perfect economic equality among citizens, and (2) Communism as it was actually practiced by countries like the USSR, China, Cuba, and North Korea. We’ll call that communism-in-practice or simply “communism” because it departed wildly from Marx’s theories even though the ruling parties cited Marx as an influence and in their propaganda.

They’re both bullshit, but for different reasons.

“Pure” communism fails for the simple reason that it will never make any sense to compensate brain surgeons at the same rate as janitors. Otherwise, there won’t be any incentive for brain surgeons to do the difficult mental labor that it takes to become skilled at brain surgery. We don’t want brain surgeons showing up to work and applying the same care and attention to their jobs that janitors apply to cleaning toilets.

Communism-in-practice has always failed because it is, basically, fascism. One-party states led by a cultish figure who is usually far more skilled at propaganda than governing, and totally disrespectful of human rights and dignity. Such regimes spend more energy muzzling the free press, jailing or executing dissenters, and obliterating historical memory than actually helping the people.

10. I have no problem with employers requiring vaccines as long as they offer health and religious exceptions in accordance with the law. I don’t support government vaccine mandates, unless the government is acting as an employer in the manner I described.

To the extent feminism simply means advocating for the equal rights, treatment, and dignity of women, yes. You don’t have to be a woman yourself to wish that your mom, your sister, and your female friends are treated equally in life.

To the extent “feminism” means locking men in a cage and forcing them to apologize for every rapist from the Stone Age to today, no.

6. I’m not opposed to the death penalty in principle, for horrible cases like mass shootings and terrorism. However, in practice it’s overapplied in a racist manner and in case where the evidence isn’t strong enough. If prosecutors can’t use the death penalty responsibly then they lose the right to apply it.

9. I do think there should be more focus on rehabilitation in prison. Unless it’s a life sentence, prisoners will rejoin society one day, and we have to be prepared for that. However, we also have to send a signal that crime is wrong and there are some who are so far gone that they can’t or won’t be rehabilitated.

16. I think there still is systemic racism. The numbers don’t lie. All other things being equal, blacks and other minorities have a harder time in police encounters, a harder time in front of judges, a harder time landing jobs, a harder time getting mortgages, have access to fewer educational opportunities, and are subjected to daily, off-putting interactions known as microaggressions. Study after study confirms this.

Lol I’m just gonna ask & answer this one myself because it’s important.

It’s my honor to be a mod of the LGBTQ stream, one of Imgflip’s biggest. I support LGBTQ rights to the fullest extent. We have to realize that encompasses more than just legal rights, but also the daily harassment, rejection, and abuse that many experience on a daily basis. There are no legal remedies if your family hates and rejects you. There are still legal battles to be had, but the biggest battle at this point is in people’s hearts and minds.

That said, LGBTQ rights have caused a huge amount of controversy here on a stream where we need to do everything possible to lower the drama. So I have made the difficult decision to be less militant about it than I have in the past.

I will say that I am frustrated with some comments made here about “pandering” to LGBTQ voters, and that they are just “used for votes.” Other kinds of voters aren’t talked about in that way, so I view that as discrimination and stigmatization of the community. I do think the voter ID law unfairly targets them in some ways.
