The Holodomor: Genocide or nah? Ask these kids | image tagged in holodomor | made w/ Imgflip meme maker

There’s intense debate about whether this event in Ukraine was a deliberate “genocide” or just a very bad case of mismanagement. I’ve seen evidence pointing both ways.

But I certainly don’t accept the Putin regime’s official line that what happened in Ukraine was no worse than a famine occurring in “many regions of Russia.”

There was not really the same level of widespread propagandistic demonization of Ukrainians the way Nazis dehumanized Jews and other groups.

Nevertheless, Stalin appears to have seized upon the failures of his own economic policies in order to escalate a program of deliberately targeting and pillaging and Russifying Ukraine. Does all that amount to a “genocide”? Again, fierce debate.

A reminder that on some questions, maybe all questions, history is inherently political.

I'm not willing to put much effort into determining whether Hitler or Stalin was worse.

Any mass killing of humans is horrible. Why you'd try to lessen Stalin's disgusting legacy is beyond me. He tortured prisoners for decades. He shot 12,000 Polish army officers because they committed the terrible crime of being Polish patriots. He starved millions of my fellow Ukrainians to death. Had my family not escaped to the U.S it's likely we'd have been ended there.

Mao? I'd argue he was the worst of them all. He killed millions and millions and millions not because he particularly hated them, but because he straight up didn't care whether they were able to hop along with his Great Leap Forward or not. Utterly callous human being, barely warrants the term.

Not trying to downplay Hitler here, but people need to understand that he wasn't unique as a mass murderer in the 21st century.

I realise that. With this meme I am by no means lessening the horrors of communism. I am calling for people-especially Neo-Nazis-to realise stop downplaying the Holocaust with the-now iconic-lines "But Stalin/Mao killed more people!". The Holocaust alone killed up to 17 million people, with low estimates placing it at 11 million. And if you count the famines as part of Mao/Stalin's killings, which I certainly do, then you would include the millions who died in WW2

Total count
Hitler: 80 million dead (High estimate) in only 12 years-6.6 million dead per year
Stalin: 60 million dead in 26 years-2.3 million dead per year
Mao: 45 million dead in only 4 years-11.23 million dead per year

These were all horrible men, and I think these figures should be taken into consideration when saying/whining "Stalin killed more people". Hitler killed the most in a very short amount of time. Hitler was by no means the most prolific killer among a century of disgusting, disgraceful, and downright terrifying men such as Mao, Pol Pot, Stalin, Beria, etc.. Hitler is not set apart by the mass murder. He is set apart by the industrial nature of the holocaust.

Where did you source your 80 million estimate? I've read more about WWII and its pre/proceeding years than most and have never heard such a high count. That would defy belief.

"World War II was the deadliest military conflict in history. An estimated total of 70–85 million people perished, or about 3% of the 1940 world population (est. 2.3 billion).[1] Deaths directly caused by the war (including military and civilian fatalities) are estimated at 50–56 million, with an additional estimated 19–28 million deaths from war-related disease and famine. Civilian deaths totalled 50–55 million. Military deaths from all causes totalled 21–25 million, including deaths in captivity of about 5 million prisoners of war."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_casualties

This includes civilian deaths, war-related famines, the Holocaust, the deaths of PoWs, all war related causes.

Are you attributing all war dead to Hitler, then?

Hitler is as responsible for all the war dead as Stalin and Mao are for the famine deaths. Not necessarily his fault, but certainly a direct result of his decisions

I agree there, but would argue that not all war dead fall under your initial umbrella of industrialized and targeted killing. That, I would say, is absolutely warranted by the death camps, Einsatzgruppen, and all other various methods by which the Nazi's exterminated undesirables, but war dead or civilian deaths in say, the Blitz, were more a side effect of war.

I feel really callous typing that...but it is how I've always felt.

My original point was the extermination of political rivals or other undesirables. Hitler was simply, because of the nature and speed of his operation, simply the worst

I definitely see that. He certainly was the most efficient.

I have always felt Mao was the worst because of the sheer number of people he killed purely because he didn't care. I guess it's a matter of opinion as to which you feel is more evil. I just huck them all in the, "Don't be them." bin. 😂
