George Washington was quite possibly the most popular President in the country’s existence.
He could have been President for life if he’d wanted. (The two-term constitutional limit didn’t come until much later, after FDR).
He stepped down after two terms because he was mindful of history’s judgment and truly did believe in the founding principles of a Republic as opposed to a monarchy.
It’s a tradition that held up with every President until FDR, who ran for a 3rd and 4th term due to the exigent circumstances of WWII.
Trump in multiple comments expressed his view that he’d love to serve 3 or more terms. Of course that’s patently unconstitutional, but neither he nor his most rabid supporters care.
Trump is absolutely pissing on the Founders’ graves here. And not one Trumpster will bat an eyelash.
