They probably tried to steal them from Melbourne and Mexico City

Detroit bid for 1944, and after they failed the IOC promised them the 1956 Games. In the meantime, they failed to get 1948 and 1952, and then the IOC gave the 1956 Games to Melbourne, and Detroit was pissed. Detroit than tried for 1960 and 1964, and they came in second by just one vote for 1968
