Traditionally our chiefs were usually
women. That fact is hidden from history because pioneers often refused to speak to a woman, so someone like the
chief's husband would have to deal with them; Cultural imperialism distorted our power structures to the point where only men could be chiefs for centuries. In 1985 Wilma Mankiller overcame that & was chief of the Oklahoma Cherokee from 1985-1995.
