Traditionally our chiefs were usually women.
The oldest person is generally considered
to be the wisest & women live longer than men. That fact is hidden from history because pioneers often refused to speak to a
woman (unless they wanted sex) so someone like
the chief's husband would have to deal with them. Cultural imperialism distorted our power
structures to the point where only men
could be chiefs for centuries. In 1985
Wilma Mankiller overcame that & was chief
of the Oklahoma Cherokee from 1985-1995.
