How do we explain Sabbath's early blues based music?

Their guitar tone.

Heavy metal does have blues scales, but not as much as hard rock does, as heavy metal has more classical scales than blues scales, but that doesn't mean no blues scale at all.

That because hard rock embraces its roots (made of garage rock, blues rock, psychedelic rock and rock n roll) and wants to stay the same over years and years, while heavy metal just wants to stray from its roots and come up with new ones, or in other words - doesn't want to stop "evolving".

And #2, the differences between hard rock and heavy metal at that time were still not clear.

Amazing
But how am I a guitarist and didn’t know this? And also if I’ve learned so much heavy metal and so much less hard rock why do my riffs tend to include blues scales?

Your riffing is leaning a little towards Black Sabbath-style ones, as they're blues-based.

It's not at all a bad thing though, after all Black Sabbath are the heavy metal founders/creators.

Oh for sure. Ain’t nothing wrong with sabbath riffs
