Try at the start with the Proto-Democrats because if slavery was abolished then the Southern States wouldn't have fully joined the new country. . .hence the '3/4 clause' in the Constitution. . .which was both a black eye for the Founders and a way out for future generations to get rid of slavery.

Yep . . . back then I identified as a liberal, and I was going to vote for Hillary Clinton and then my fellow liberals actually called me a racist because I preferred Hillary to a first term U.S. senator with ZERO meaningful national level political experience and no management or leadership history . . . even if he did have a great speaking voice and a cool skin tone.

It was at that moment that I ceased being a Dem Party member on non-thinking but all feeeeeeeeeeeeeeling ideological auto-pilot and finally stopped and looked at what liberals, progressives, and leftists were doing to this nation and what they had become. I have voted Republican ever since.

I'd argue not. Wilson made it a federal crime to speak out against the government and FDR stripped as much power from the states (and funneled it into various alphabet agencies) as he could. Dude believed we have a right to recreation, for crying out loud.
