I fail to see how they could be worse on national debt when they at least argue for less spending than their counterparts on the left.

The accusation they make about Democrats is that we tax and spend. Republicans like to just cut taxes and spend; they haven't actually offset their tax cuts for the past three to four Republican administrations. The national debt has *increased* under the past three to four Republican administrations, while the last two Democratic administrations saw the national debt go down.

The numbers don't lie. Democrats are simply better at keeping a balanced budget. While Republicans and right-wingers don't like taxes, our methods actually work.

And yet the overall deficit rises continually. I'm aware our expanding GDP allows for a fair amount of leeway in that regard, but the fact remains (in principle) that people who advocate for spending more are simply going to spend more than those who don't.

The fact of the matter in whole is that both parties enjoy talking about the budget and how they can control it, but when they've actually got power it's spend spend spend on their line items and Democrats just own up to the fact they spend more.

I think you're missing the point. The point is Democrats are still BETTER on the budget and national debt than Republicans. That's the bottom line. Perfect? No. Better? Absolutely.

Assuming this fellow ran their data correctly, I'll take this opportunity to note that I'm not so stuck up as to say I'm never wrong. The data indeed appears to agree with you.

That said, as far as principle goes, I'd rather have a government focused on saving money and reducing the debt than one that is more spendthrift. While deficit spending is absolutely necessary in many situations, I don't think there are many who think our current debt levels are just dandy...the interest payments alone are horrifying.
