Theory: Ash was in a coma the entire series and the Pokémon on his team were challenges he had to overcome before he woke up and he was on heavy medications to make sure all of his dreams were good dreams.

I think I heard that theory somewhere else before.

I've never been fond of that theory for the sheer reason that it's unoriginal. Pretty much every fantasy cartoon or anime has a coma theory. Shoot, I've even employed a variation of the coma theory to explain the contradictory endings of Digimon Adventure 02 and Last Evolution Kizuna.
