The popular vote is nice in principle, but in reality would allow major urban centers to completely control the vote. Patriotic prose about, "Everyone's vote is equal" does nothing but conceal the bulletproof reality that urban and rural centers will always prefer different policy on a given matter. Therefore the "popular vote" does nothing but disenfranchise those who choose to live a different lifestyle than an urban one.
New York is the perfect example; the big cities vote blue while the massive, yet sparsely populated, rural areas vote red. The cities control state policy. Were this to be implemented on a national scale it would reduce all rural folk to little more than serfs, inasmuch as national policy is concerned.
