This is then, 1st Sgt. Kasal, being helped off by Lance Cpl. Chris Marquez and Lance Cpl. Dan Shaffer.
The Bible says that we as believers are to help one another which reminded me of another passage in the Bible that encourages us to be hospitable to strangers for we may be entertaining angels (Hebrews 13:2).
With that said, if we aid a fellow brother or sister, we may be aiding a spiritual hero or future hero of the faith.
Looking at that picture it tells you only that 1st Sgt. was wounded. We do not know the extent of his injuries, nor do we know what happened in that house.
What had happened is that the Marines entered the house to clear it and was ambushed. Marines were seriously injured. 1st Sgt Kasal entered, killed one insurgent, but another insurgent tossed a grenade into the room. The noble Marine shielded the two Marines with his own body and bore the brunt of the blast which gravely injured him.
Using his sidearm, he protected his fellow Marines until the other Marines pulled him and the others out. All the while, he lost half of his blood.
For his heroism, 1st Sgt. Bradley A. Kasal, now Sgt, Maj., was awarded the Navy Cross, the second highest medal to be given to a Marine or Sailor by the US. Department of the Navy.
