I was there. MLRS we fired more rockets than any unit. Our Battery firing 75% of those rockets. We were on the border for a week, firing in mass artillery raids, paving the way for the Infantry and Armor. Then the mass prep on G-Day. These fires were some of the greatest in combined arms since Korea. This Shock Effect saved lives in the end. It’s violence and depth we’re too much for any Man endure. We treated the prisoners well, and we felt sorry for them. We just wanted to get home ourselves.

Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait. Three countries in 100 hours. Ended up on the Highway of Death. I was standing in the open watching when the unit fired. When driving I was in the second vehicle in the convoy. I drove in rain and pitch darkness, we almost were run over by a column of tanks. Luckily something told me to stop.

All twelve rockets or two ATACMS missiles can be fired in under a minute. One launcher firing twelve rockets can completely blanket one square kilometer with submunitions. For this reason, the MLRS is sometimes referred to as the "Grid Square Removal System" (metric maps are usually divided up into 1 km grids).

For the field artillery, particularly field artillery with a serious counterfire mission, the other indispensable technology was the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). This system locates itself, aims itself (after you tell it where the target is), moves with the speed of its Bradley chassis and engine, requires a crew of only three (in a pinch, two or even one), and can launch twelve rockets, with over 5,000 bomblets, more than 30 km (18 miles) at twelve different targets in about a minute. A battalion of twenty-seven launchers can launch 140,000 bomblets in that same minute, and did so on more than one occasion. Artillerymen, none of whom had ever seen an MLRS battalion TOT, were as much in awe of the trajectories and destructiveness of the MLRS in the Gulf War as anyone. The MLRS was the weapon of choice for counterfire, artillery preparations, and artillery raids.
