The question is this. Was the institution of slavery in the US categorically different from the Third Reuch? Almost every nation on the planet agrees that Germany mid twentieth century was an abomination to humanity. In no way condoning slavery, I do not see what happened centuries ago in the US as the same thing.
Even Stalin's Russia, which may have involved a genocide many times greater than Hitler'
Germany was not at same level of evilness. Stalin was in many ways a beurocratic if ruthless buffoon. Had Stalin taken over the world his regime probably would have been too inept to rule. The point is that the general notion of the sacredness of ALL ARTISTIC creativity is sanctified. Very few things in life weigh against this balance.
So a perfectly good statue of this or that misguided general really does rank up there with that of a primitive bust on Easter Island or a Warhol of Kennedys. No distinctions are made up to the point of banning a symbol of hate, the swaistika, which is basically indistinguishable from a symbol of a religion. The anti-swastika for lack of a better word in the Hindu religion, is in no way connected to the Jewish holocaust. Yet the ovens of Dachua tip the balance and allow us to decide to desecrate the anti-swastika forever. So really GOP arguments are bad not wrong. And your childish maligning of them does lead down the path to tyranny.
Would you have us outlaw Grant's last name. Perhaps his first, Ulysses. Perhaps burn his namesakes masterpiece The Illiad & The Odyssey. That is in bizarro world where Confederates hypothetic succeeded. Ofcourse no! You say this is hogwash and humans - US liberals and conservatives alike - have natural perspective. You say what is wrong with appeasing the pains of a maligned people -NA blacks. You say that destruction is occasionally required for progress to make its stamp on the world - taking down statues in the South that may otherwise stay for centuries more. The Third Riuch said these things too.
Unfortunately the above arguments are superfluous. Conservatives are upset ironically because words resembling these cannot be expressed. The amount of breath required to be clear on the distinction between a salute to Hitler and the confabulatoon of an 'ok' sign? That amount of air does not exist in a human body. The individuals making these pleas are figuratively suffocated. Imagine Tom Hanks posting this exact same rant (with better grammar and spelling.) His career would be cancelled.
