IP tracking is very easy if you know what you're doing and your victim doesn't. One way to drastically decrease your risk is to check out the website of any link you're sent. If I sent you this link; imgflip.com/i/58d1jz, it would be a good idea for you to search "imgflip" before clicking the link if you didn't already know what imgflip is. Obviously, you already know what imgflip is, so it's unlikely that someone could track you with that link, but the same principle applies to all other websites.

Well, it's just something I've picked up after my few years of being on the internet.

I'm not a computer expert but from what I've learned so far it is actually legal to track someone's IP address (which may vary from state to state). IP address is attached to the owner's computer I think. However, I looked up my own IP address and i can find it online. I still do not understand how it worked but that's what I've discovered.
