I dont really have a problem now with the canon change. However there is no better indication of the change. When the Melenium Falcon escaped the asteroid worm? There was no discussion of appeasement. Now true there may be distinctions between mythological snakes and modern sci-fi worm monsters. But what those are I do not know.
