The Japanese would not quit the fight when it was obvioous they would lose. Were given ample opportunities to surrender honorably, but chose to continue the fight.
Additionally, the Japs didn't honor any conventions regarding the conduct of war and treatment of POW's.
Furthermore, the Nips ruthlessly killed Chinese civilians as a matter of policy for over twenty years before the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred.
Finally, their barbarity had no limits. Many Jap field commanders were sadists and cannibals. They would routinely beat prisoners for no reason. They would eat the liver, heart, and other parts of prisoners...they believed it gave them "special powers".

Prior to WWII, there were limited rules of engagement. That is what came out of that war, rules for war. We had to allow nukes, we had already used them. Stay in school, and you too can learn about history. So, wrong.

Napalm is no longer legal. As are many other things in the acts of warfare under the GC. I'm not saying it's right. Splitting people on a log isn't right but Christians used to do it. Crucifixion isnt right but Romans did it. Breaking someone's spine by bending them over a spear isnt right but the mongols did it. There have been many things throughout history that were practiced and thought it was "okay" at the time.

It was right for the time. It saved a million American lives that would be lost between 1945 & 1947 storming the home islands. And it saved millions of Japanese who would die as soldiers or as starving civilians. The net result was fewer lives lost.
