They don't understand - or, more likely, are willfully ignorant of - that these countries still have market, not state-controlled, economies. It would be more accurate to call them welfare states. To achieve womb-to-tomb health care and retirement for all, they have a level of taxation that we Americans wouldn't tolerate. We would rebel at, for example, paying $7 a gallon for gas.
The first modern welfare state was probably the German Empire (1871-1919). We know what happened to it, as well as its successor states.
