Never said that. You do know by law felons can’t have guns? Drug users can’t have guns? Did you know Biden’s son Hunter lied on the background check to obtain a gun (which is a felony)?

If a criminal wants a gun - they will get a gun. Chicago for instance has strong gun control laws. Guess who is losing that battle? Lawful citizens - criminals are killing people DAILY.

By restricting guns in the hands of lawful citizens- the government is giving all of the power to the criminal.

Please, enlighten me how that is a good idea.

Felons and drug users can't have guns? that's a restriction of their freedoms. What if they want to defend themselves?

Take that up with the law. I didn’t say they couldn’t have guns, only that they can’t have guns legally. Hence, the “by law” statement.

Right, but it isn’t one that takes weapons away from - again - LAW ABIDING CITIZENS.

You following along here?

What “Gun control laws” do you think are a good idea? Take away everyone’s “AR-16s with long clips”?

Okay, sounds good on paper - but how does one do that? FBI background already checks:

18 USC § 922(g) & (n). Punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment. May receive minimum sentence of 15 years without parole if offender has three or more prior convictions for a felony crime of violence (e.g. burglary, robbery, assault, possession of offensive weapons) and/or drug trafficking felony.

A. Possession or receipt of a firearm or ammunition;

B. By a subject who falls within one of the following categories:

Felon - (Additionally, persons awaiting trial on felony charges are prohibited from receiving firearms.);

Drug user or addict - (Often shown where paraphernalia seized, subject tests positive for drugs and/or subject claims drugs were possessed for personal use.);

Alien - (Includes illegal aliens and aliens lawfully admitted under non-immigrant visas, i.e., those aliens not admitted for permanent residence. This provision does not prohibit aliens who lawfully possess a so-called “green card” from possessing guns or ammunition.);

Is subject to a domestic restraining order - (The order must prohibit contact with an intimate partner, or child of the subject, and must have been issued only after a hearing of which the subject was notified and at which the subject had an opportunity to participate. The order must also find the subject poses a threat to the physical safety of the intimate partner or child or must prohibit the use, threatened use or attempted use of physical force.);

Has a prior conviction for domestic assault - (Includes a prior conviction for any assault or threatened use of a deadly weapon against a present or former spouse or partner or child or guardian of any such person. The subject must have been entitled to a jury trial and been represented by counsel in the prior proceeding or be shown to have waived those rights.);

Fugitive from justice - (Fled any state to avoid being prosecuted or to avoid testifying in any criminal proceeding.);

Dishonorably discharged from the military

Also, how does one know someone has a “mental illness”?

Who's paying? Who's paying the FBI? Maybe not even that, just sensible pricing. Costs are wildly inflated.

Any psychiatrist, given that you need high qualifications to get into it in the first place. And, if the gun salesman just says no without valid reason, then there should be consequences. I would also like for a permit system to be put in place. For things like handguns and smaller hunting rifles, you just need to pass the background check and be old enough. For semi-automatic weapons, larger hunting rifles and flamethrowers, you need to have a permit, for which you need to pass a more rigorous check to show that you are a completely responsible adult. Finally, military-grade weapons and grenade launchers should be completely out-of-bounds.

Who’s paying the FBI? The federal government id imagine. So now they have to pay the FBI and select licensed psychologists. Are they going to be able to process MILLIONS of people a year in a reasonable amount of time? Likely not.

Per CNN (of all sources):

“.. approximately 16.5 million background checks conducted between January and October 2020 for the sale or transfer of firearms..”

I don't think I made myself clear. checks for things like criminal records should be conducted every time someone tries to purchase a firearm. Checks for mental issues should be conducted the first time someone either buys, inherits, or is gifted a firearm, and should be conducted every 5 years following the initial check. Honestly, I would like it if they were treated like dental checkups or health checkups.

Just have them do a psychological evaluation. After all, gun stores are likely to be in urban areas, where there is also likely to be a clinic. So, given that some countries require you to submit a criminal record no older than 3 months, why not have something similar in place for mental conditions?

Who’s paying these psychiatrists? Which psychiatrists will be authorized to make these determinations? What if they discriminate? Should you not be able to obtain a firearm because someone simply says “no”?

How does one define a mental illness. Something like a sociopath, a psychopath, an emotional zombie. Maybe just someone who is mentally unstable. The last characteristic is the most likely to commit a school shooting. But psychopaths, zombies (feel zero emotions) and sociopaths can all be pretty dangerous

Sure, but more importantly- how does one diagnose someone prior to obtaining a weapon. You’d have to send EVERYONE to a psychiatrist for evaluation prior to obtaining a weapon - and even then it’s possible to slip though that.
