I can't speak for others, but I upvote most of the comments I reply to. The only exceptions are the comments that are political that I strongly disagree with or if someone is being exceptionally rude.

But then again, most of my memes themselves don't even get upvoted, let alone my comments.

Unless I'm in a argument where I do NOT respect the other point whatsoever (usually because of racism, etc... Won't get into it) I always upvote. I think it's a matter of learning to do it over time.

On reflection, I do agree with you in those circumstances ...
I certainly will engage with someone who has a different opinion and I will upvote but in the past, but I have blocked someone who posts repeated abusive comments
