I'm 14yo and me and my dad for a while have been wanting to get into knife making on a lower budget. We already do wood and leather work. But what budget tools would you recommend for just starting knife making?

Hi Because I am retired my knife making budget has always been low. But because I'm a retired Carpenter I already had the tools I use most often for knife making, a 4 in. angle grinder and a 4x36 bench sander. Making sure the abrasives for you bench sander are for metal they are different than for wood. For the steel I started out using lawn mower blades and large sawmill blades cut out with the angle grinder and a metal cutoff disc.

Thanks! That should be easy since we already have an angle grinder. Do you heat treat your knives?

Not all, some people rather not have them hardened. easier to sharpen plus its good steel it will take a beating. Sometimes i use hardened steel like a file and just be careful not to get it to hot when cutting it out and grinding to keep its temper.
