I saw that in the news earlier this week, extremely motivating!

For those that don't get the significance, the son (on the right) is a newly minted Second Lieutenant . His father, on the left, is a Master Sergeant. When a new officer receives their first salute they must not only return the salute but give the person that rendered the salute a silver dollar.

It is also significant in that the son is following in his father's footsteps which whether spoken or not is always a father's hope. Furthermore, the son is already doing better than his father by becoming an officer, which is also a dream shared by fathers across America.

Dr.Strangememe, thank you for posting this and thank you for the great wishes for our veterans. I thank God every day that I was given the opportunity to serve alongside such warriors and I am also thankful that they continue to serve.

Have a great Easter!

I don't know how it is in the Marines, but in the Army it's considered by many to be a far greater achievement to be an NCO than an officer. At least that's the general idea of most Soldiers. It could all just come down to personal choice and opinion.

NCOs in the Army (E7 and above) usually have 20+ years experience and do most of the dirty work in battle. Officers usually hang out in the background and take care of the politics, making the rules, etc...

Sorry, you caught me in the middle of dinner

We can spend all day going round and round on this, not going to. I totally agree with your point about NCOs and SNCOs making the world go round. I retired as a GySgt (E-7) after 22 years, I've been there, done that.

Suffice it to say that Jr went out and got a four year degree while dad probably didn't earn his until he was in his mid to late thirties if at all. Jr's already earning more money than pop does as well.

The point is, whether in or out of the military, the American dream is for your kids to have more opportunities and to do better in the whole game of life than you did. Get it?

Okay, I didn't mean anything by it. I served in the Army from '01-'09 so I understand. Got out as an E5 promotable. Just didn't want to do the full 20+ years.

Officers have their good qualities, but overall I would rather be an NCO. I respect officers and their rank, as I do every Soldier who joins to serve their country. There are bad Soldiers and there are dedicated, great Soldiers. I would like to think I was one of the latter.
