What my mom kept saying when I first watched the movies was that what she liked about the elves is that they are immortal but can be killed and still they risk giving up their immortality by going into battle.
Yes, I really like the line from the end of the hobbit about how many of the elves, who could have lived forever in the forest, had died in the Battle of Five Armies.
