I thought about being a therapist, but knowing myself I wouldn't be able to pass, I've always been a C student, preferring to read rather than working on assignments.
With that, I think most of us are in need of counselling because all of us have been through things directly, or indirectly, that had affected us. There are also past traumas that are passed on generationally. One simple example is alcohol and physical abuse; if not stopped, it becomes a generational cycle.
However, even if some of all of the children doesn't become abusers themselves, seeing violent outbursts, and experiencing neglect that have other negative effects which their children after them will likely take on. They know that the said abuses are bad but they are not told that bitterness, resentment, unforgiveness, trust issues, etc, are also bad. They are certainly not told that by their parents, and the opinion of friends and acquaintances are only that... opinions.
