"Wanted to be a part of the lgbtq+ community."
Yes, you are correct. If I was Heterosexual I would want to be LGBTQ. I would not want to deal with the hate in public or being told every single day that I do not understand. I would be scared to spend time with LGBTQ members for fear of them hating me or calling me unintelligent. I would be very angry if someone said to me "How can you only like girls".
I don't see what is so wrong with wanting to be involved. And even now when they try they get called transphobic and it develops more fear. In reality, LGBTQ does not exist. Only humans. But we have isolated ourselves based on something unimportant. It is good for us to meet and join each other but why must we exclude and frown upon those who are not like us? I have a friend whose sibling is homosexual. He is scared to speak about it with his sibling for fear of offending him or saying something wrong.
So yes, we should correct them. But we should not be so hard on them when they don't get it or have questions. When they say it is odd some people are not being homophobic, They are simply confused and need answers. Because yes, they are not like us so they will make mistakes. It is okay to correct people until the correction becomes hatred.
The way you worded this was to the point without sounding discriminatory. Well done. You have explained this situation very well. I agree completely.
