So apparently people having their lives ruined for a racist joke they said ten years ago is just consequences for your actions?

I don’t really see that happening. Dr. Seuss hasn’t been canceled for instance, just a small handful of his books have been pulled.

Other things people have been “cancelled” over:
—Sexual assault/harassment (typically only when there is a long pattern of it and multiple accusers)
—Continuing to loudly deny the legitimate results of the 2020 election long after the court challenges had played out and the Electoral College voted
—Actually storming the US Capitol, which entailed breaking several serious laws

I am fine with people facing criminal and career repercussions over stuff like this.

Worth noting too that the right-wing has its own cancel culture which they deploy over silly stuff like featuring witchcraft in books (the Harry Potter book burnings), using awkward language in HR trainings (the Coca-Cola controversy), literally just saying Black Lives Matter (Nike, NFL boycotts) etc.

I’m just giving general observations about this cancel culture debate — it was a reply to you but wasn’t aimed at you, sorry if it seemed that way.

I know, but in the comment I didn't say anything about Dr. Seuss or anything about the right not having cancel culture, did I?

I know — I brought up all these examples from recent memory, because I find it helps to ground the cancel culture conversation in something concrete.

Of course, anyone in their right mind would be against “cancelling” other people for no reason. But, you need to know what the actual controversy is first, to make an informed judgment.

I’m very pro-cancellation of rapists like Weinstein — I’m very against cancellation of fun children’s books about witchcraft and Coca-Cola and Mr. Potato Heads for their silly alleged transgressions.

First of all, I know Dr. Seuss didn't get cancelled and I didn't say anything at all about him. I agree that sexual harrasers and capitol stormers should get reprecussions (obviously), but it's just evil and authoritarian to say election result deniers should get punishments! Denying the election results isn't illegal or even ethically wrong, therefore you shouldn't get any punishments for it. It's just stupid people, there's no reason people should be punished for it. Lastly, when did I say I was right-wing? I'm actually pretty left-wing, but I oppose cancel culture- on both sides, left and right You just saw one comment by me and you assumed so much stuff about my beliefs!
