Regulations are good but not affective for open firearms market because it only applies to league sales of guns. people who are nuts or have criminal record do not pass background checks by lisensed gun dealers or pawn shops making it only harder for people who want them for self defense hunting shooting sports etc. most illegal guns come from Mexico due to poor border security. If we had half the work put into gun laws and regulations in to border security it would decrease gun drug and child trafficking. with a virtually nonexistent illegal gun market crazy people would have a hard time obtaining them leaving the only reasonable option steeling them like in cases about teens shooting up there school with their perents gun. The best way to prevent guns from being stolen is to keep them in a gun safe and to practice proper gun safety but if some nut job broke into my house to steel my hunting rife I would push his off button befor he could take my gun and the same goes for any other person I have met so far.
