Unlike other games games like Mario or Zelda, Fire Emblem has a different main character for nearly every game so to represent those games they use different the protagonists to represent them. If Zelda had a different character every game instead of Link they would use the different protagonists to represent those games. And don't use the "They all play the same" complaint, they don't, they're different.
