The IRS isn't in anybody's corner. They were created to control the people and nothing more. If anything they favor the rich less because they take more of their money than they do the rest of us.
I belong to a church that does not have a paid clergy so I really cannot speak about churches that do. Our clergy are part time clergy that have regular jobs outside of the church. And they do pay taxes.
But here is the point. Instead of trying to find ways to steal more money from the people why aren't we looking for ways to stop the government from taking as much. I really will never understand that mentality of seeing someone who isn't being taxes or taxes enough and wanting the government to punish them more. Why aren't we going the other direction and trying to make government more accountable to the people and get rid of taxes. We are sooooo over taxed in this country with income tax, sales tax, communication tax, federal excise tax, this tax, that tax, breathing air tax, tax, tax, tax.
Our entire lives are taxed and then taxes again over and over. It is any wonder why the rich have easier lives. They pay all of the same taxes and they get taxed on their income at a higher rate than we do but they still have more money. Whereas the rest of us schlubs are barely getting by because he have to support a very large and very unresponsive government that wastes money on studying why hair turns gray when people are under stress.
Instead of condemning Pastors for not being taxes, condemn the government for all of it idiotic taxes. I wish all people didn't have to pay income tax. It is our money. We worked for it. The forced to give it to someone else is slavery. The only difference between us and those that were brought here from Africa and sold to work on a plantation is are allowed to keep more of our products of our labor.
The vast majority of clergy in America are not rich. All you are thinking of are the mega churches. But if people feel it is their obligation to God to give money to their church and they belong to a church with a paid clergy then that is their right. You may disagree with it and that is your right. But you do not have a right to tell other people what to do with their money.
Before this nation decided on "In God We Trust" as the nation's motto there was another motto that they strongly considered, "Mind your business." To be a free nation then EVERYONE must be free and not just those you like.
