Nothing wrong with making minimum wage at your first job, not sure what your point is there? It's when one is 30 years old with a bunch of kids and you're working a minimum wage job that you should probably reassess what you're doing with your life. Don't expect to make a "living wage" if you don't want to go out and improve yourself.
I like your example of Betts, lots of examples like that. It's the American (& Canadian) dream, having the opportunity to pull one's self up from nothing to success in one's chosen field.
