Raises in the minimum wage do not automatically increase prices. Fewer employees these days work under union contracts that cause an automatic raise based on minimum wage. And, raises are mostly to adjust for inflation that has already occurred. The $7.25 per hour minimum has already lost 22% of its value or purchasing power since it was enacted. Many states have already enacted higher state minimums, meaning that the incremental increase to $9.50 an hour this year would have almost no impact on their citizens. McDonalds and WalMart already pay their employees more than that. In fact, most large employers would not be affected. And, since many low-income employees shop at these companies, their costs are not likely to inflate a lot. No. The issue is fairness to the politically weakest workers in America who have no unions or others looking out for them.
