I was very late with obtaining a cell phone and only purchased one when I really couldn't do without it anymore (my current phone is my first serious cell phone in very active use). I live close to the Belgian border, and I already noticed that just crossing the border made phone calls 3, 4 or even 5 times higher. I guess I need to thank the EU for forcing phone companies to make phone calls in the EU regardless to which member state affordable. I wonder if calling from the UK to the Netherlands (where Iive) will get more expensive with the brexit and all.
Back in the day we had "collect call" in which not the caller but the receiver paid. I remember many parents wanted their children to use that service while on vacation with a big group, in order to make sure they were alright and but not to bother them with the high costs. I don't know if that service still exists, but it's hard to imagine now it was needed.
