I’m listening to an audiobook while doing schoolwork and it isn’t a lot of fun

The problem is, there's no such thing as multitasking. As multiple studies have confirmed, true multitasking—doing more than one task at the same time—is a myth. People who think they can split their attention between multiple tasks at once aren't actually getting more done.

Just going to add to this-
Multitasking is actually switching your attention between multiple things quickly, you cannot split your focus.

multitasking is just doing a crappy job at multiple things at once

no it is not. you can try, but it is only possible to focus on one thing fully at a time.

Well, I once heard of a Russian spy who managed to secure the engine room on a French ship, while finding her American friend a date at the same time...

The answer is: NO! It can't be done. And no unlike popular believe women are also not able to do this, they only manage better than men to hide it. It is proven the human mind can only fully focus on one thing at the time. This is also precisely the reason why most countries banned using a cell phone while driving.

Now even computers can't multi-task. They still perform all tasks one by one, but as such a high speed that humans can't catch up and so the illusion of multi-task is created. However, you will notice that if you have too many programs open on your computer it will eventually slow down, or put programs on hold that it deems lesser important. Although, a little catch is in order as these days computers have multiple CPUs but that's basically cheating. You can see that as a human with two heads and one head focusing on one task and one other head on another task, and that is not true multi-tasking in its purest meaning.

Scientists have indeed, as TheCartoonMemer pointed out, confirmed that true multitasking is an illusion.

A nice example, I am drinking coffee while writing this... Or am I... No I basically stop my typing whenever I take another sip of my coffee, so basically I put one task on hold in order to be able to perform the other, only to resume the main task when the other is done.

I agree and it is a myth to believe you can multi task. Try listening to 2 conversations going on at once. It's impossible. I think in some rare cases doing something that's mindless like doodling on a paper while you're on a long boring phone call with someone or knitting a scarf while you watch TV can be done but your mind still has to switch between those 2 tasks. As for women I meant more like we have to juggle many things at once like I'm cooking dinner while helping my child with a school assignment and holding a baby. But my mind still has to switch between all those things. Best to just do one thing at a time.

I know, my remark about women was rather because it's a very popular myth that women can multitask where men cannot, and that is actually proven to be a lie, as both genders can't. However I know the myth about multi-tasking women comes from the typical housewife who has to clean, feed kids, and cook all in once, but here too, the truth is indeed that she actually does one thing at a time, but switches so often and so quickly that it almost looks like multi-tasking, but that she's actually not.... A bit comparable with my computer example.
