Caveat: I think Trump was already the worst President in modern history prior to Jan. 6 — his multiple scandals, undermining of faith in the election process, bungling Covid, etc. etc.
Adding Jan. 6 to that puts him comfortably among the worst Presidents of all time, if not the absolute worst.
The two white supremacist dolts that preceded (Buchanan) and followed (Andrew Johnson) Abraham Lincoln come to mind, because that is how far Trump has driven us apart as a nation.
But while slavery itself was an enormous fundamental issue dividing the states that it’s hard to imagine any President could have resolved short of Civil War, Trump has manufactured and deepened most if not all the divisions of our modern era out of whole cloth.
Biden inherits much more of a national trainwreck than W. Bush handed Obama, and it’s not even close. And Trump broke it all in the space of just one term.
Maybe electing a racist, rapist, reality TV star to lead the country wasn’t such a great idea?
