Sometimes, full iron is easier to get than leather. Iron is the optimal choice for speed running anyway. Gold is too hard to find (before the nether update), Diamond is almost impossible, and leather takes too long.

ik. Leather armor is really hard to craft. You have to commit cow genocide just to get one piece of the armor.

Yea I just typically go for iron cause I have like 5 stacks of it and I want to make some diamond armor and make it really good and then make it netherite but I want some mending books first

Iron is the optimal choice for speed runners, it’s easy to find and it doesn’t take too long to craft. Plus it provides more protection than leather and gold anyway. I don’t know how anyone is supposed to get chain mail in Minecraft.

Chain mail sometimes spawn on enemy's and you can find them in chests but iron is just easy to get especially once you have good loot you'll have a lot of it

Yea it's also just really good to use for most of the game until you can get and enchant diamond armor
