Oh yeah, I had the same thought yesterday and was gonna meme it but haven’t gotten around to yet.
The election was close enough that American people likely would have re-elected Trump despite all the bigotry, abuses of power, and corruption — if not for the sheer incompetence of the Trump Administration.
The farcical impeachment “trial” showed the GOP is utterly incapable of policing its own, which is what we need in a system where the bar for impeachment is set as high as it is. Party line or effectively party-line votes (Mitt Romney excepted) will never do the trick.
The country is ripe to be pillaged by a modern-day Nixon: basically, a competent authoritarian who can manage a decent enough job to not burn down the country but who also knows how to operate the levers of power with absolutely no principles or scruples.
A Nixon: or even, a Putin.
Unless the GOP reforms itself and re-learns how to put Country over Party (as the late Sen. McCain or indeed Romney would put it), it’s only a matter of time before the inevitable swings of the political pendulum give us a Republican President like that.
