Circling back to this seemingly mundane detail of Trump’s Presidency which was also one of the most flabbergasting.

I'm getting less and less comfortable with the "liberal" media's obsession with norms, precedents and traditions. It's like Republicans deserted conservatism for fascism, so the Democrats became conservatives.

Indeed, there’s a danger there.

But also, the news media’s focus on norms can be helpful as an objective reminder of how much of an aberration Trump’s presidency is/was.

It’s a subtle but effective form of advocacy IMO. Even though NPR isn’t an “advocacy” outlet by any means. The Democratic Party does have more moderate/conservative elements: comfortable middle-class and upper-class people who just want things to run well and the Democratic Party wouldn’t win elections without their financial backing and votes.

“Good government” is a principle the GOP has totally abandoned now and the Democrats should capitalize on it.

Norms aren’t everything, but they’re one thing that can help our country, if not make progress, at least keep it from falling apart.

Try explaining that to the right-wing extremists.

Try explaining that to native Americans, or blacks.
