The EMD F40PH is a four-axle 3,000–3,200 hp (2.2–2.4 MW) B-B diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division in several variants from 1975 to 1992. Intended for use on Amtrak's short-haul passenger routes, it became the backbone of Amtrak's diesel fleet after the failure of the EMD SDP40F. The F40PH also found widespread use on commuter railroads in the United States and with Via Rail Canada. Additional F40PH variants were manufactured by Morrison-Knudsen and MotivePower Industries between 1988 and 1998, mostly rebuilt from older locomotives.

Amtrak retired its fleet of F40PHs in the mid-1990s in favor of the GE Genesis, but the locomotive remains the mainstay of Via Rail's long-distance trains and an image of the locomotive hauling the Canadian was featured on the frontier series of the Canadian $10 bill. Charles Calvin, also known as Charlie, is the deuteragonist of the Henry Stickmin series, who appears as the deuteragonist of Infiltrating the Airship and Completing the Mission, and the tritagonist of Fleeing the Complex.

Charles is a veteran helicopter pilot who works for the Government, and one of the youngest and most experienced pilots. He meets Henry Stickmin for the first time after General Hubert Galeforce asks for his assistance in bringing down the notorious Toppat Clan. Depending on Henry's choices, Charles can become one of Henry's best friends (if allied with the Government), a neutral ally (if Henry goes rogue), or an enemy (if Henry becomes the leader of the Toppats).

Charles is best known for his "greatest plans", which involve him trying to crash his helicopter (or another military-issued vehicle) into something. He is one of the most well-known characters in the series and is considered a fan-favourite by many.
