As of the end of September, there were about 100 total deaths among children and adolescents in the US of coronavirus. That's gone up to about 130. That's out of approximately 250,000 covid-related deaths (and roughly 80% of people in the US who are suspected to have died of coronavirus were 65 or older).
There are roughly 20,000 people aged 0-14 who have died while they had coronavirus (many of them had other health issues or another illness at the same time). This is roughly twice the number of child deaths yearly in the USA (9,000-10,000).
Young people generally are not at a high risk of severe sickness, much less death. The elderly and those lacking a strong immune system are the ones most susceptible.
Yes, America needs to take care of its children. But they should return to school eventually (not necessarily right now).
America shouldn't stay closed for too long. It's possible to reopen wisely, and still protect those who would be most susceptible to the virus.
I got this info from the Washington Post and the CDC website.
